Source: Internal

At the end of the working day, many of us are exhausted, lacking in energy and just plain tired. We see the reason for this immense mountain of workthat we have to deal with every day and that simply doesn't seem to be getting any smaller. But if we are honest with ourselves and recognize our Everyday working life under scrutiny we will realize that the Energy thieves also in the numerous distractions which we are subject to during working hours or to which we subject ourselves. And since we are i-pointing eager for knowledge when it comes to efficient working we had at our last i-worx day in September Workshop on the topic of "Deep Work".

Definition of "deep work"

The term "deep work" refers to a A state of maximum concentration that allows us to concentrate without distractions. around us, to immerse ourselves completely in our work and to work not only quickly but also to a high standard. The term was coined by the Computer scientist Cal Newport in whose book "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World" he Simple and applicable techniques and methods presents how we can (and should) optimize our work processes. The be-all and end-all of "Deep Work" is the No use of all communication media for set times during the working day.

"Deep Work" vs. "Shallow Work"

As already defined, "deep work" means Deep working. In return, there is the so-called "Shallow Work" = superficial work. The latter includes "work-related" activities such as the Answering e-mails, coordinating projects and organizing meetings. These tasks are an integral part of everyday working life. However, they should be little time required be done, so that more time for qualitative work remains.

"Deep work" in practice

In our workshop we have tips and methods learned how we can use "deep work" in everyday work of our agency can bring. After all, many things sound very good in theory, but are almost impossible to implement in practice or require a great deal of effort. Not so "Deep work" methods. We present here 4 tips that are easy to integrate into everyday working life:

1. working environment without distractions

We live in a time of constant availability and constant notificationsthat constantly jump out at us on several channels. In order to be able to immerse yourself in deep work, you should Eliminate distractions as far as possible. This means that all Turn off notifications, put your phone away, only have the Internet browser open that you need for work. If you jump back and forth between several tasks, this creates a so-called Attention deficitwhere it can take up to 20 minutes to get back into the flow.

For our employees, this means getting rid of unnecessary Teams channels. or switch them to mute. We have already measures in this regard and will only use one channel from now onin which for all important info are shared. That doesn't mean that we don't send each other funny pictures or take a coffee break together in between. We just know exactly when to do it.

2. create a time window

It makes sense to Workflows in time windows to schedule. Think in advance about when you are most productive. The greatest attention spans are in the morning between 8 and 10 a.m. and in the afternoon between 2 and 4 p.m.. If you know when your attention starts to wane, you can use this time for superficial work.

TipThe "Pomodoro method". This method, invented by Italian entrepreneur Francesco Cirillo, involves sharing the Working time in 25-minute segments ("Pomodori") which are 5-minute breaks be interrupted. After about 4 "Pomodori" you make a 15-20 minute Break.

3. train your ability to concentrate

The best way to keep your Train the ability to concentrate is - you guessed it: "deep work". In the world of Instagram, TikTok and others Social media time wasters we are not used to, to simply do nothing for a while or not to be constantly occupied with the outside world. That is why it is all the more important to give the brain either really Valuable information to deliver - such as with the Reading books - or the brain Regular breaks to treat yourself - for example with Meditation.

4. "Deep" instead of "Shallow Work"

Prioritize deep work compared to the superficial activities. Create time slots for your highly concentrated tasks and stick to it. Don't jump back and forth between the two, because your Attention has a limit. Prioritize and ask yourself "What is more important to me?" "Which tasks are worth actually concentrating on and delivering a high-quality result?"

"Deep work" can be learned and is a A question of habit. We are all creatures of habit and can adapt incredibly quickly to new circumstances. The Methods for "deep work" in everyday working life naturally also means integrating its Identify habits.

Be attentive and honest with yourself. We are all too happy to indulge in daily distractions. But at the end of the day, we don't have to be drained and exhausted. When we and prioritize our (also limited) time effectively and sensibly. we can use the Feeling of satisfaction after a working day go home or to the couch.
